View Full Version : Mental Block on FFR?

Recently I've been playing and slowly but surely getting better, and working on my Perfect to Good ratios. Last week I was consistently getting strings of 150-200 perfects in a row, and had some SDG's on medium difficulty songs, which for me was really good.

Then for the tourney I got a 595-5-0-0-0 on Hyperactivity and posted that, thinking that I could do better.

Right after I posted that, I have started playing crappy. Truly crappy.
Whereas I used to get 1-2 Goods in a string of 300 notes on songs, I'm now getting between 25-30 goods on those same songs. Songs I've easily FC'ed and SDG'ed before I'm now missing bunches of notes, and I can't even hold together a string of 50 perfects.

What's happening?
Last week I had some nice plays and was happy.
This week, I've played worse than I have in over a year, and I can't stop. Standard and Tricky songs that I've played for fun because they were easy FC for a long time I now get scores like 298-65-3-7-9.

I'm thoroughly confused, and getting very frustrated.

Just keep whoring the song. Or you rest for while and go back to it later.

I have extreme mental blocks on the song silence.
And I <3 jumpstream, it's just some patterns...

I normally start getting mental blocks when I do whore songs.
Which is why I don't.

This exact same thing has happened to me before, bro. I suggest not whoring songs at this point (you'll only get more frustrated) and don't play as much. In about two to three days, you should be back to normal.

Don't do this. Ever. I would recommend you do the opposite. Take a break from the game, one or two days. I'm not saying don't play the game AT ALL for one or two days, just cut down. I took a 3 month long break from FFR after getting bored, and when I came back I was miraculously better than before. I also started improving again.

EDIT: Reptile ninja'd me, more or less.

Yeah, taking a break almost always worked for me. Except on that damn pylons song.

I finally got a 4 on it though. :-)

Also, I suggest playing songs harder than the one you're trying to better.

Maybe you're having a bad week, I usually take a break from FFR for a couple hours when I'm suckin then when I come back, I do better.

mirror mode helps. also you can stop playing for a while and come back in a day or two so your subconscious forgets the mistakes. or try increasing your speed mod, or try screen shrink.

You're in a slump.

Stop thinking you're bad, and you won't be bad. The way I play, FFR is like 1/4 confidence.

Just play so many other songs afterwards that you won't remember the notes very well when you get back to the one song you want to play again. You don't need to wait a day or more.

I dont know why i get mental blocks on ffr but not stepmania. But i think its because 2x is to slow and actually forces me to read the notes.

I only get mental blocks if I've played too long... Sleep normally does it for me :)

Play other songs for a bit.

Simply not playing for awhile works best for me.

I have a large problem with mental blocks as well, especially on songs with unique patterns. What I usually do, if my mental block is extreme to the point where I can't "read" the song's arrows at all, is play other songs for a long time. Say, at least a week; maybe several months. I also use FFR "Mirror Mode," which helps on those unique songs like Balloon Fever.

I plan to try a new strategy as well: stay away from FFR entirely and just play SM for a few days.

worst mental block = Rottel-Da-Station (first 2 patterns)

The absolute truth right there.

That's not a mental block. That's something you can't do - Ps. I can't do it either. Mental block is something you were originally able to accomplish, yet for some reason, your mind won't register to that accomplishment anymore, or you are too stressed out or focused on one task.

Eg.

270 Combo - The Games We Played Part 1
290 Combo - Choprite
80 Combo - Caprice
30 Combo - Gaussian Blur

I don't call my Piano Etude Demonfire first 100 combo a Mental Block, because I was never originally able to do it.

Rottel's initial patterns are indeed pretty awful.

Well - I seem to partially over this thing, I was finally able to set a new high score for myself, and got back to FC'ing some 7-8 bar songs. But that song for the tourney jsut kills me everytime. I used to average between 10-20 Goods on it, now I'm lucky to get less than 40.

I see what you are saying... but I have been able to do it before. Same with Demonfire. I used to combo the first 100 WITH AV misses... now I can only do it about 1 in every 10 tries.

I have an absurd mental block on Vertex BETA. Just before it goes into the streams/trills, the jumps that go 86-82-42-82 at 220 combo. It pisses me off, I always anticipate messing up so I do.
