I'm reeeeeally lost here with the whole mixing songs thing. I have plenty of ideas for writing my own techno songs. I've tried dabbling in Audacity a bit but all of my songs come out sounding choppy and lame.

I guess the two things I wanna ask would be

1) What kind of software could I use to generate my own beats?
2) Can I make quality tracks with just Audacity/other freeware?

or to restate that, what equpiment will I need to start doing some serious mixing?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Cool, you're making (going to) music, too. Well, if you have heard any of my music, which are all mainly remixes (look on Resonance, NOTE: White noise radio IS NOT A SONG! Just a set of sounds.) Ok, anyways, my first actual song remixes were choppy like you were describing. After a while you get better and more acquainted with Audacity. So my suggestion is to find some beats from another song. If you're looking into making your own, then try some of the MixMeister software (it costs money.) If you want to mix two songs, try Virtual DJ.

For a list of softoware, see this sticky:

If you can get acquainted to more than one software, you can probably make some pretty cool music.
Send me a sample of your music when you make it.

*edit* Just found this: http://www.musix.org.ar/en/download.html

It's close to 1 gig, so make sure you have room (and time for download)
And the "helpful pages" section of the sticky I showed you is REALLY helpful.

Take a peak into something called Psycle, too.

Congratulations.

One more question...what's a good way to get samples? Is Audacity going to be good enough?

I guess what I'm asking is how can I get like the "5-4-3-2-1" out of the opening of Trip Machine and stuff without getting the rest of the music?

I'd stick with audacity...

Just cut it out and save it as a new MP3..then you don't have to do it more then once.

I'm kidding. There's no way I could ever beat a kid whose name is actually DJ. That's impossible.
