I realize there have been many threads on this already, but even after looking for almost a half hour, I have found nothing that answers my questions. I have been playing this game for almost a year now, and am interested in stepping a song. I already dowloaded StepMania, have gotten the song I want to step on the Edit Sync thing, and have figured out how to change the BPM, how to change from 4ths to 8ths to 16ths etc., but it still it seems impossible to step a song. Here are my main questions:

1. Is it possible to have the song playing (not the sample, mind you) while you step? That way, you can just press 1,2,3 and 4 along with the song.

2. Is there any way to determine the exact BPM of a song without having to toy around with it for over an hour?

If anyone has the answers to these questions, please post. If someone is able to help me a lot, I might even reward credits (in the thousands).

Thank you.

1. Yes. Don't. Unless you have godly accuracy, it'll be off.

2. There are programs. I don't know where, but google 'BPM Finder'.

1. Select the area you want to do this for and use ctrl R.
2. I usually just find the bpm of songs on google, or you can use a program like winbpm, etc. to find the bpm of songs. Try a link in The Ultimate Simfile FAQ if you want to find these types of programs.

Edit: ninja'd, and I do recommend using ctrl R. Ya, true, even with my timing it's usually off, but it will often all be off by the same amount, then I just move it all by an 8th note or so, and then it's synched.

Ok, what do you mean by 'select an area'? I pressed control R and it didn't do anything. Then I held it down and moved the arrows, but I didn't play the song.

You can set the area markers with the space bar, then you can record during that part of the song with ctrl R. Or, you can just use the play entire song command, cancel that, then ctrl R to record for the whole thing, until you cancel that. Does that make sense?

..Almost..Not quite though..I got the space bar thing, I think. I'm not getting the part about recording.

Ok, you use left and right to change shift, so you can set it to only quarter notes, etc. After you've selected an area, you can use ctrl R to record there, and press the 1,2,3 and 4 keys while that's going on to add notes, and it will round each of them to the nearest whatever-you-put-the-change-shift-on-th note. So, if you put it on quarter notes, it will round them all the quarter notes, etc.
