View Full Version : How to properly make a spinfile

You may not think it this way, but spinfiles are made simply through the use of the Stepmania Editor. Each corner on the disc is one of the four arrows in stepmania. This picture here shows you which arrow goes to which corner:

Spinning song is relatively easy. Since you're not using your fingers for the game, most of your arrows should only be 4th and 8th notes. 16ths are appropriate where used appropriate, but I'm guessing most of them will be used for novelty purposes (in other words, to make the spinfile look "cooler").

I recommend avoiding a frequent usage of "jumps" (having to move the mouse in a diagonal direction, like downleft to upright). Once again, they are appropriate were used appropriately (for example, NOT in a stream of the same note, but instead used when the song jumps from a low to a high note, or vice versa).

Spins are always welcome. Spin as much as you like.

I only have a suggestion and that is that should you use something like 32nd notes or harder, then they might as well be jacks for ease.

If a song is in r1, do we already have permission to spin it? Or do we have to go get permission again since it's a different game?

PS. 700 posts.

You already have permission, but I really don't want any more r1 songs on SIU... makes it that less original.

Aright, I'll just check out the Blanket Permission thread then.

Are you guys on drugs? =(

Whirlpools are most certainly no fun, especially 16ths or higher.

Where is the song selection to make a spinfile from?

Question:

As with FFR, is it necessary to get the permission of the song artist for, a song you want to be submitted to spin it up?

Yes.

You can check the blanket permissions thread for things to spin though.

iPatch, I sent DJS's Comic Bakery for Spin it Up, please tell me if you have it. Also, since the prize is not a inportent as getting more songs in, please send Feedback via PM if you dont like it.

I've been getting a lot of cool spinfiles from you guys, but I'm going to have to request you try and also make some spinfiles with a difficulty of 4 and under as well. It's going to be really topheavy in its current state. Most of the spinfiles I have so far are pretty tough as it is.

Is there really much of a need for files under 4? The first day I played SIU I found anything below 4 too easy to enjoy.

More 4 files would be cool though.

I know this sounds crazy, but there are still people who can't pass 5+

The songlist needs to be well-balanced, or else we start catering to the veterns and then it becomes a mess a la ITG.

Pass isn't a term on SIU, as it's impossible to fail, but I know what you mean.

I'll make some easy files then.

Edit: I just made and sent one right after I posted this.
I'm also really good at email messages.

Is there anyway we can test our spinfiles before submitting them? I would like to test my spinfiles to make sure the movement patterns fit well with the song.

as far as directions you could just play with the numpad and tilt your keyboard 45 degrees to the right

There is no downloadable SIU simulator, and I doubt there ever will be.

pokelda
02-13-2007, 03:55 PM
There may be one, though unlikely. At least a stripped down version purely to test files.

Hey, whoever is taking in these sims please tell me if you got mine or not.

and A2, real funny. Bet you 200 tokens I make it in SiU before you do.

Yeah yeah yeah, omg bump I know

This seems like the best place to ask, are triples/quads allowed in a spinfile?

RF_Galaxy
03-7-2007, 07:56 PM
No, spinfiles can't handle jumps or harder.

pokelda
03-7-2007, 08:25 PM
spinfiles CAN hold doubles but is strongly not recommended as of now. Jumps in siu refers to diagonal transitions btw.

dore
03-7-2007, 08:32 PM
oops

Are doubles frowned upon simply because of difficulty or because of SIU being glitchy? The file I made has a few sections with doubles.

iPatcH
03-8-2007, 11:08 AM
While SIU the option the use them, it doesn't work. It'll give you 90% on the one you got right, and the one that was suppose to go on the paddle to the left goes to something along the lines of -.0000000042%

pokelda
03-8-2007, 12:49 PM
And it IS frowned upon because of its current layout makes zxc positioning confusing for some.

Also, send me the spinfile so i can make suggestions/feedback on it since iPatcH does not really take into account of transition time on difficulty and entertainment. *cough* Experience *cough*

I'll probably just make another one, as this one has waaaaay too many jumps for a glitch like that lol
