View Full Version : Bug Reporting (Read me first!!)

Notice a simfile not working correctly? Something else not functioning the way you expect it? Report it in this thread! Within a short time (maybe [okay, hopefully]), your bug will either be verified or you will be told what's wrong on your end! Hopefully this thread will also contain simple fixes for bugs common right now. If you find a REALLY GLARING bug PM it to me or another administrator instead.
Feature requests will probably be ignored so don't bother right now. :)
Recent Fixes
- Fixed issues with the apostrophe in simfile comments.
- Fixed issues with ampersands in user/song names.
Simple Fixes {thus far}
Q: My songs are fast, slow, or just off in Resonance.
A: Seeing a lot of this. Check the sample rate of your songs. Currently, only 22,050 or 44,100 songs are supported that I know of. This seems to be a limitation with Flash/a Flash MP3 library, etc, etc. To be on the safe side, try to include a 128 KBit MP3 at 44,100 Hz sample rate. Also, [U]if you can, try to include an OGG file (128KBit, 44,100Hz) for ITG users. Please everyone if you can. Hopefully this issue will be fixed in the future, but as of right now this is the best way to do things.
Q: These steps suck. Fix them please?
A: Talk to the step author. Resonance can't ensure quality of steps, so if you have anything to say, PM them on the forums or leave comments in the step file's entry in the Database. Same thing goes for offbeat steps--it can often mean that they simply didn't have it working correctly on their end. If you contact the step file author and you and them come to the conclusion that it really IS a problem with Resonance, then please--feel free to leave a report of the issue.

Like http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/sims/index.php?songid=5045 ?
(the purple note syndrome was on purpose, btw; the steps are onsync in Stepmania and off in Resonance, he just moved the gap to colour them differently. Purple = red, pink = blue, cyan = yellow)

Good example that explains the notes at the top. Look at the sample rate of the MP3 included in the file. 48000Hz. Due to limitations the file is forced to play at what I presume to be 44100Hz. So doing a bit of math, the file probably plays at about 92% speed of it's real rate.
Definately trying to figure out a fix to this situation, though.

woah does that mean all the resonance files we uplaod have to be redone to those specs?
Yesssss
October 2nd, 2006, 07:48 PM
Yes, but it shouldn't be very hard to do, and 44100Hz is the most common sample rate anyway.

But yeah, I didn't even know that the comment thing was a bug... I honestly thought it was just my computer. But yeah Rick, you might wanna get on that sometime soon, as I've been wanting to comment on much in resonance.

Most of my songs are off-beat. Example- Don't break my Heart 2003, the steps appear too early, 3-5 seconds before they should. One good timing point is the jumps in the very beginning. Anothing is at the line "before my life was black and white", where after white there is an eletronic effect. This should be synched to a freeze-jump, buit it appears too early.

As far as I know, this issue was fixed. Off and on, some bugs might creep up that just may appear for a short time while someone is tinkering with something or another. It's sometimes best to wait a while and test it again (that is, if it's a small bug like files won't upload) and if it still doesn't work, report it.
It could be just one of us breaking things. :D

Hopefully the issue can be fixed someday... I myself either use ogg files with flexible bitrate, or use 192KBit... 160KBit minimum. I hate having to downgrade quality to fit the standards.

I believe you might be able to use 192/160/etc. kilobit files (I haven't tested this out yet to be certain, so try and report back the results)--I just recommended 128 since I know that one works.

I have a bug to report. When you launch FFR Resonance from the menu in the left, which takes you to an interface like FFR R2's, and get to the songwheel, one of my banner images which is like 350x112 isn't being scaled down, so it's sticking out of the banner box and covering most of the page.

Hm. I have a problem. I don't know weather it's my connection or what. But I uploaded a song and it doesn't seem to be on sync with the arrows. It's perfect in StepMania, but not on here. Although while the BPM here says it's 170, it's actully 168.??. It's a 128k 44.1 KHz file. I wonder, does Resonance run off the BPM you put in the box where it asks for one or does it run off the one in the simfile? I think it would run off of the one stated in the simfile, but it doesn't seem to be doing that for me at least.
Thanks.

My song is exactly one measure off in Resonance. Every time, it is the exact same distance in the gap. It's really weird.
It was done in 160kbps bitrate and 44100 Hz sample rate, OGG format. Should I re-encode it in 128kbps bitrate? Because if I have to, I won't get the chance until later.
EDIT: And it's not just my file, every other file I've played has the same problem. Could it be my system?
I'm running Gentoo Linux with the latest netscape flash version (9.0.31.0) and Mozilla Firefox. I had a similar problem in Konqueror.

This isn't so much a bug as an annoyance...but why do download numbers constantly change?
I had a simfile that was downloaded about 60 times, and I check it the next day to find it went down to around 30. Does Resonance read people's computers to see if they deleted the simfile, and adjust the download count accordingly?

yeah the bug where when I try to make a simfile and it takes me to FFR the Game is still there and its annoying....
You're trying to MAKE a simfile on the site? I don't think that's possible. Go to www.stepmania.com, download the game, and use the editor there to make simfiles. Also, read the stickies in the "Simulator Files" forum, and the README you get from the Stepmania program.
This isn't so much a bug as an annoyance...but why do download numbers constantly change?

The download number everyone sees is the number of downloads in the past week. If you want to check your total downloads, go to the 'Manage' section (one of the top links in the simfile database) and you can see how many downloads they got IN ALL, and you can DELETE them if you want to (or if they're stolen, official, whatever and you don't want people harping on you anymore).
No, FFR does not scan people's computers for that info. I think that's impossible to do directly from a website. In order to do that, the site would have to download a program onto your computer that would scan it and send it in. That make everything run SOOOO slowly, and it would be illegal, I think.

I actually have 3 bug/error things, which I should've posted in here first. They were all pretty much ignored in their separate threads, so I don't really know if anyone looked at them. Here are things I've seen:
1) Top 100 List, items #4 and #5: They're the same simfile! They have the same comments, high scores, and everything, except number of plays.:?
2) When I click the Manage link to view my simfiles, one of them is missing. I've uploaded 27, and only 25 display, and no obvious link to a second page.
3) Something should definitely be done about the comments on simfiles. Especially noticable in the top of the Top 100 files, there are very large spam comments that stretch the page. There needs to be a way to delete these comments, or make it so the text wraps to fit the width of the page.
4) [EXTRA] What IS going on with stolen simfiles? They keep appearing and nothing is being done.
That's everything I can remember.

Some songs have empty difficulties. Check the high score charts before playing. If that difficulty is a bunch of 0s, don't bother with it. Otherwise, try refreshing the page and stuff. And I think picking sims from the simfile DB and top 100 list are more reliable than using the "play FFR resonance" button at the top.

I took it as an april fools joke and waited until this morning and it was STILL off and people were complaining.
The music file is fine on my computer, and so are the stes, so FFR HAS to be changing it one way or the other. I'm going to try uploading one more time, and if it doesn't work, could anyone help me?

For your first problem, it was probably the sample rate of the song. Read the first post, it should say which sample rates are supported on FFR.
For your second, since you changed the mp3 file, the gap is probably different. I think that happens whenever you make changes and save your music file. So every time you edit an audio file for Stepmania/FFR, make sure you re-check the gap.
Tell me if that doesn't work.
it won't even let me pick my songs, automatically it gives me this song and it is way too easy and the same one each time.
Be a bit more specific than that. Which songs are you trying to play, and how do you get to them? The Resonance link at the top? The simfile database? Also, what song do you keep getting? If you expect any help, you'll need to elaborate.

Ramengan
April 16th, 2007, 03:51 PM
That's happened to me, too. Perhaps the 10MB limit is for the original size, not the compressed. If you really don't want to re-encode the video, and the simfile can't live without it, maybe you could upload it somewhere by itself, and put a link in the simfile description. That way, people can download the video if they choose.
I think bemanistyle allows up to 15MB. EDIT: nvm, it's 10.
EDIT: FFR now allows a filesize up to 35!!!!! megabytes. That's a HUGE improvement. I guess I can make better quality videos for my sims now.

Hey whenever I try to play Resonance on my laptop it works but there is no sound, just the steps. I have tried to play despite this but it is much more difficult without the supporting beat. I tend to use the "Play" button but sometimes access from the top 100. Resonance also works fine on our family computor so it is not my connection as it is hooked up to the same system. Serpentine, Resonance has syncing issues when loading simfiles. If you scroll down the page or something while it's loading, the effect is magnified. Refreshing the page can sometimes minimize the effects. It will still be on sync when downloaded to Stepmania.
abm, you don't right-click when playing/loading a file on Resonance. Just left-click the number for the difficulty you want and wait patiently for the song to load.
I hope this helps both of you.

Gap depends on the song. It's probably luck that your songs are all synced at that.
xSerpentinex
June 18th, 2007, 11:10 AM
well what i mean is that even when I edit the song so that there is no time before the start it still comes out at -0.080 which leads me to think maybe my computer itself lags behind a little, or maybe the assist tick could be slightly off. have you ever had a song that has no gap?
Ramengan
June 18th, 2007, 05:49 PM
I have, but when you edit the song, whatever program you're using will add a small gap when saving. Every time you edit and save your song, you should check your gap again. Since you're probably using the same program to edit all your music, you get the same gap each time.

I have noticed something on the song Kingdom Hearts: Sanctuary. When you play it, it plays for three seconds and then stops (without any arrows showing up) and says that "your score will be sent to the server".
I'm confused as to why this happens.
Also, I'm not very good at posting things in the right places. Sorry!

July 6th, 2007, 06:28 PM
I'm assuming you're talking about the one in the top 100 (but please be more specific, like providing links to the simfiles in question), and that one has a sample rate that's faster than what FFR can use (Resonance only supports certain sample rates, as shown earlier in this thread), and that may mess up the playing of the simfile in quite a few ways.
If you still want to play it, download it and play on Stepmania. Playing on Resonance will make the song play slower than it should due to that sample rate, anyway.
I think that's all poorly worded, but whatever. I think I got some of my point across.

I uploaded my song (skyscape by phantasma, also submitted to FFR :P) and when I play it it is almost like it plays slower than the real mp3 and stepfile should play. The song sounds like when you take a song with vocals and slow it down, and the vocals sound deeper. Same case here...I have no clue what it is either o.0 Bug?

This has been answered in the first post. Plus, I've said it over and over again.
Simple Fixes {thus far}
PS. You shouldn't upload a song that you submitted to FFR, that'll get it disqualified from judging and placement in the queue.

All of a sudden, in Resonance, it will preload the song, and the bar will extend beyond its little box and just sit there; the song will not start. It was running fine earlier in this very session. I have tried emptying my cache and even switching browsers, but it keeps happening. Anyone know what to do?

I have now also tried switching computers, so it must have something to do with my account, or with Mac. Very strange, though. It was working perfectly up until that moment that this started happening.

Your problem may have to do with the NumLock key. Try toggling it on/off and see if the numpad responds one way or another.
Also, that sounds like pseudo-spread. There's a program called AutoHotKey that can remap the keys to whatever setup you like ("real" spread, if you will). There's a thread on how to use it somewhere, but I don't think it's that hard to use.
@kip: That could be a problem with your internet connection, network settings, firewall, I don't know. Anything that would prevent you from downloading the simfile, really. Restarting a computer may or may not help. Resetting your internet connection may or may not help.

Your link is incorrect. It should be this:
http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/sims/index.php?songid=12692 (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/sims/index.php?songid=12692)
The ... is in your actual link (see the status bar at the bottom of the page when you highlight your link) and that messes it up.
Anyways, after finding the song, it works fine for me on my laptop. I'm using Mozilla Firefox. If you're playing it from school, there could be a firewall/filter setting that interferes with Resonance.
You can't really fix that problem, but try at home or something.

I've uploaded my TGTMN w/ super oni steps but when I play it on Resonance it's really gay have-nothing-to-do-with-the-song-steps.
To be more exact it's missing about 1000 actual arrows in Resonance. When you DL it it's fine. I'm guessing it might be the beginner rating I gave it. If so that's incredibly dumb.

If your file has Edit steps, it'll overwrite the beginner difficulty for Resonance, and that could account for missing arrows. If it doesn't, I don't know what's wrong with it.

I'm not sure whether this is a bug in the game or my PC but whenever I try to play ANY simfile, even those that have worked before, the steps start coming around 2 seconds before the music starts to play and the songs become massively out of sync...
P.S. No it's not that normal delay that comes before starting normally its a 2second delay on steps (they start at right time) and a 4 second delay on songs
^^ If non of that describes the problem I'll upload a video 2 youtube :x

Hmm, I may have had a similar problem.
I had a problem with steps and song loading, then freezing right at the beginning, and skipping to a full measure ahead of the song for all files, and I realized it was a problem with my audio. If that's what your problem is like, I can help out. If not, then a video would help greatly.

I think you're alone in your problem. All of FFR should load without whatever software "ocgett" is. I've never heard of that, so I can't say I trust it. All you should need to see the pages is a browser and a good internet connection. And is this a problem with all websites you visit from time to time? If so, probably do a virus/spyware scan?
FFR itself was down for a while for major updates in the past couple days. Could that have stopped you from loading pages?

Maybe that is the problem. Also, I recently got Windows Vista; maybe that is the problem. That "ocget" thing that I mentioned before, I don't have it, nor can I download it. So I'm guessing that It's either Vista or my school's filter. I don't know, I'll probably try on another computer and see if It's Vista that's making my life miserable. Alright, I think that I isolated the cause of the problem. I tried to get to the simfile database at another computer and it worked. That same computer was running Windows XP. The computer that is giving me problems is running Windows Vista. Just to confirm my hunch, has anyone who is using Vista encountering problems on the site? If so, please post here so I can figure out my problem.
(Maybe it's my way of getting to the Simfile Database that is messing up. On the computer that works, I had cut and pasted the address where all of the zelda songs are shown. If this is the only way to get to the sims, then maybe later I will post a list of the Sims that I like so people can leave me the links.)

FFR's servers have been corrupting ZIP archives for an eternity now. I see no solution in the indefinite future, because the list of FFR's problems which date from prehistory has still not shrunk:
-Upload limit is not actually 35mb zip, but smaller than 29.4mb (and yes, my uncompressed folder is less than 35mb as well)
-Sync issues on Vista: Might be a problem with default Vista sound settings then?
-Uploaded ZIP archives being corrupted eventually, leaving users unable to download to play in StepMania, but FFR Resonance still works

I have Vista, and I can usually use the database just fine. I use the links provided in the navigation bars, and I don't really have trouble downloading or playing anything. Any problems I do have don't seem to link to Vista at all.
FFR's servers have been corrupting ZIP archives for an eternity now. I see no solution in the indefinite future, because the list of FFR's problems which date from prehistory has still not shrunk:
-Upload limit is not actually 35mb, but smaller than 29.4mb
-Sync issues on Windows Vista
-Uploaded ZIP archives being corrupted eventually, leaving users unable to download to play in StepMania, but FFR Resonance still works
-Non-44.1KHz MP3 files played back at wrong speed + pitch, but all Ogg Vorbis files work at any frequency
-Lazy staff won't check more than 2 of the 20 new simfiles I uploaded (24 hours and counting =\)
Yeah, simfiles do regularly get corrupted, and I'm not sure if even the admins know the cause. As for the other stuff (in order)...
-The upload limit could be for the decompressed folder holding your simfile. If otherwise, then it should probably be increased. At least it's better than before; the limit used to be 10MB.
-I had sync issues, but it turns out Vista wasn't the problem (well, a little). I had to go to my speaker's options in the Control Panel and check "Disable All Enhancements". This solved the sync issues in R1 and Resonance, and also allowed me to play songs in Windows Media Player without the annoying prebuffering that made songs skip like a bad CD player 20 seconds before they were over.
-I know a lot of things get corrupted, but sometimes using WinRAR instead of Windows' unzipping tool works just fine.
-I believe this is a limitation of Flash, and nothing can be done about it.
-I don't think the staff check simfiles like that. I believe it's the database system that has to check the contents of the simfile to properly display things like the banner and difficulties available.

I have tried 4 times to upload a simfile to the database now, and all 4 have failed. Once I was given a "Page cannot be displayed" error, and the other 3 times I was given this:
Warning: move_uploaded_file(sims/sims/6290811919Diane Crow.smzip) [function.move-uploaded-file.html (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/phpmanual/function.move-uploaded-file.html)]: failed to open stream: Read-only file system in /home/virtual/site1/fst/var/www/html/sims/upload.php on line 55

...how do I get this file to upload? There are no problems with the file. I have it uploaded to Stepmania.com and it worked the first time. I used the same browser and everything. It shouldn't be my username either, because I have 3 other files uploaded here.
EDIT: Tried again a little later, and nothing new.

I'm getting the exact same error.

I'm having an error with my file not being checked no matter what. I uploaded 'Moonlit Wilderness' four times and the file never ends up checked out, despite it having nothing questionable (no problematic banner or background, a simfile with no stops, speed changes, or anything, everything working properly in Stepmania and all), while a file I uploaded alongside it (Drop the Bomb System S.F. Mix) checking out within 30 minutes of uploading.

Same here, and one bold text "Something is wrong with uploading the file"...
>.<; Seriously, I just made it, with no error. (Sound of my Dream by DJ Satomi.)

I'm having the same problem as the above posters on uploading >_>. It's pretty frustrating. Well, obviously it's just something with FFR's uploading system, it should be fixed soon.

Well, I still can't upload, but I just realized that a couple weeks ago, FFR silently updated their flash player so that 48KHz MP3's work. Either that, or my CHU-BURA simfile is an anomaly to technology.
and now uploading is fixed.

Okay, at the front of the list, you said that the songs might be forced to play at a lower level of whatever, how would you change them to do that automatically if you are making the files in Step Mania?
I've had times when my perfectly-in-sync-with-StepMania stepfile has a bad gap on Resonance.
This guy said it perfectly too.
Currently, only 22,050 or 44,100 songs are supported that I know of. This seems to be a limitation with Flash/a Flash MP3 library, etc, etc. To be on the safe side, try to include a 128 KBit MP3 at 44,100 Hz sample rate.
How though....?

You should still post your issue, because admins may not know WHICH problem you share with others.

You mean slow the music rate so you can step it? In the editor, Esc -> Song Options.

Try a music editing program, like Audacity. You can convert your mp3 to 128KBit and 44.1kHz in the save options. You'll need the LAME encoder to save as mp3, but there's Google for that. Or you could save as .ogg, which is built in; that format should also work.

Wow I am lost. Oh well, that's okay. Unless I make my own music, I don't plan to get permission to put songs on FFR anyways, my stepfiles are rather pointless. Thanks anyways.....

The music player is not working, i press play and nothing happens and if i press play before the page finishes loading the player freezes on pause then if i get it off pause u cant get it to play again. This (as far as im aware) only happens on my sim i just made called Stand -Itachi & Shikamaru Remix- well the only thing thats different about the player is that next to the play button theres (what looks like) a previous and next button o.0. I have a changing background in this sim anyone thinks thats whats causing this??

The simfile you mentioned works for me. You shouldn't right-click and hit play while it's loading. Resonance ignores changing backgrounds, so you shouldn't have a problem there.

The mp3 file contains characters which the Flash Player does not like, which could include &, ', or Unicode characters. Rename the mp3 and reupload if you really care.
Also, all my 48KHz mp3 files work (all ripped from videos), so this is no longer a blanket-bug with the player.
