View Full Version : just played my X-men sim and found a bug

No music played and when it finished, it remained in the game mode.

Thing worth noting about the song that MIGHT have caued it (although I don't see how it would) is that the sim uses a video clip as a background. Also, there is a pause at one point. I don't know what caused the music to not play, or even if the music actually stopped when it was supposed to because there was no music to judge sync on.

Also: there should be a way to play challenge steps. For my files I usually made piss easy steps for each difficulty then put the difficulty actually worth playing on challenge.

Also, is there no score evaluation screen in this version? I played another song earlier and all it had when it finished was that it said my score was recorded for use in the next version.

Oh, and does this not support DWI at all? I find that a lot of these simply don't work and most people just include the DWI in their files. For example, I went and looked at Moogy's because I tend to like his pattern choices, but none of his work.

Oh yeah... one more thing: nice work guys. I was honestly wondering if any sort of system like this would ever be added, if only for possible legal reasons, but it's nice to see it happen.

Hell, even without the playing ability, the MP3 preview is awesome. I honestly can't imagine how much work must have gone into it.

Resonance was built for .sm conversion, so we can't use .dwi files.

well ****

you guys should download every file that doesn't have a SM. Then, load the dwi up in the SM editor. Then, save without making any changes. Then upload with the .sm file in tact.

Actually, I guess it's not that important. Really though, a news post suggesting that everyone reupload files with SM files would be nice.

R2 was built for .sm conversion, so we can't use .dwi files.
I thought this engine was built from the ground up and only makes use of R2 graphics.

ok figured out what the problem is.

The stop is recognized as a time change. This makes the file unplayable.

However, it can be forced to play via this link: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/Resonance/index.php?Speed1=3&playmode=6&simartist=Bursurk_Lurk and choosing to play one of my own files. Forcing it to play, I'd assume makes it simply ignore any time changes and I guess it skips loading music since it shouldn't be played anyway. Either way, that's what the problem is, so I guess it doesn't really matter since I shouldn't be able to play it at all anyway.

However, I recently came across a bigger problem. I've uploaded 2 files and they both said they were uploaded successfully, but they do not appear in my uploaded filles list. It appears as though they were NOT uploaded correctly despite the page telling me that they had. In addition, a lot of the links provided for checking stats and things are broken now. In fact, I tried to access a page listing all of my uploaded sims earlier (like http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/sims/index.php?u=Bursurk_Lurk ) but it was broken as well. It works now, it seems, but again, my two recently uploaded files are not present. Should I try uploading again? Could it be a problem with my browser? Would using another browser possibly help?

Afro,

I found the problem. It couldn't find the music in your file. Why? Well because you use a .wav file and because it uses stops. Flash MUST use .mp3 for streaming. Some files have an .ogg and I have internal scripts that actually convert from .ogg to .mp3 in order to make it work.

Yes.. I will write up the .wav to .mp3 script tonight on the server and have .wav files working by tonight or tomorrow sometime.

There is no way I am downloading 20 files a day in order to convert to .sm. People will need to upload in .sm until the .dwi conversion is done. Right now the .dwi conversion is at about 75-80% completion with 100% completion and integration expected within the next week. The .DWI conversion actually converts .DWI to .SM so that the conversion scripts can then convert from .SM to Resonance.

Great job on finding this, it will probably help our conversion rate %. If you find any other oddities or files that should but don't convert, let me know and I will check into them immediately.

Cheers,

Synthlight

*EDIT, PM ME YOUR AIM NAME.. I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS*

Haha. I use wavs for everything. Better file size with only a little loss of quality and I can get even better file size for more loss of quality if I want.

By the way, I was completely joking about the download and reupload thing.

Anyway, it's awesome that you're making such progress on this already. I'm really impressed.

EDIT: Tried PMing but your inbox is full or something. Either way, my AIM is Afrobean16 and it is in my profile.

Ok well I gotta go soon, so I'll just post this.

It seems that in-game the banners are displayed at their actual dimension size instead of being sized to fit. Basically, I use higher resolutions on a lot of my banners and the X-men one when displayed in the interface is way too big. Not important, since the interface doesn't seem to be 100% up and running anyway, but I thought you'd like to know.

That happened with the past 5 file I tried to play. It was playable, but it was just...music.

working fine here too

likely if the mp3 plays in here: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/sims/index.php?songid=3642

then it will within Resonance

Would be cool if you would post links to the files that are having problems ;)

Thanks a ton

Oh that makes me laugh. WAV files are horrible when it comes to filesize/quality, as a comparible 44,100Hz PCM (non-compressed) WAV file at 16 bit stereo runs in the 10MB per minute range, whereas 128 kb/s (CD Quality) MP3/OGG runs in the 1MB/minute range.

Those figures are from the top of my head, so eh. But still, WAV is horrible for this kinda stuff. :)

**EDIT**: I just tested out your X-Men file and it sounds like it was recorded through a paper cup. OGG yo. :P

Yeah, I didn't have any decent audio software before. Best compression I could get was in sndrec32.exe rofl

And if I remember correctly, the original MP3 of the song wasn't a great quality anyway, and I wanted to make up for filesize because the sim comes with a video background.

If you have Nero, there's always Nero WaveEditor (I personally love this). Also, there's Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) if you're a total cheapass like I am.

I'm sure there is other software available but that'd be going even more off-topic then I took this. :)

Looks like LD's quote was changed from R2 to Resonance in his post.

HI R2 ENGINE!!!!!!!

Synthlight

I think there is some major major confusion going on here.. This (without going into details) is the sequence of events.

1. R2 was released..
2. A year or 2 go by
3. The R2 engine is COMPLETELY rewritten..
4. The new engine and interface are about 50% done
5. Development stops for 10 months
6. I revive the code
7. Write a 600+ line conversion engine to make it into useful tool
8. Release early beta of Resonance.

With that being said, after the resonance engine is finished by our coders, the core will be transplanted back into R2 in order to make it what it was stopped from becoming almost 2 years ago.

I hope that clears up any questions for everyone. This Resonance may have started it's life as the 100% rewritten engine replacement that was meant for R2 but it had to be picked up and finished. In the process it found a more useful use for the site and has now become Resonance. As such, it will get a new skin and all that wonderful stuff.

Keep in mind though that while this was intended to be R2, it is COMPLETELY rewritten so that it has none of the shortfalls or bugs that R2 had. Calling it the R2 engine would mean to many that it is a copy of what exists on the site. That couldn't be further from the truth.

Questions?

Cheers,

Synthlight

Questions?

Do you plan to make the arrows bob up and down when you hit an arrow in Resonance? It kind of does that on sm, like theres an effect when you hit an arrow key on the arrows at the top. I've never seen this same effect in R2 and it'd be a cool addition if something like that would be possible. Question not very related though, sorry.

That shouldn't be difficult, I will look into it today.
