I got this letter in the mail today:
"Almost Free Trip to Japan"
The Dean of College Office is looking for first and second year students eager to visit Tokyo, Japan. Technos and Carleton will cover most of the expenses.
Purpose: Overall we want students who will benefit personally, academically, and culturally from the experience, and whose comportment will reflect well on both Carleton and the United States.
Candidates should have:
-A genuine interest in Japan, its people, culture and history;
-An excellent academic record;
-A willingness to meet people from different cultural backgrounds and experience elements of Japanese culture, living conditions, and cuisine;
-No previous travel experience to Japan;
-Little or no proficiency in the Japanese language; and
-Citizenship of the United States;
The program is rather rigorous, so a certain amount of physical stamina is required.
----
That last little bit raises my eyebrows a little. I'd look this technos thing up if I really cared and wanted to know what it was about, but I think it's more fun just to imagine what the hell they want to do with a bunch of smart kids that don't know **** about Japan or Japanese that involves physical stamina.
btw there's no way I'm doing it. Too much bother to apply and plus it would seriously **** up my summer break money-making opportunities.
