lets say, for instance, i'm in the critical thinking forum.

i'm browsing the first page, and halfway down there's a topic i end up posting in.

i dont notice at the time, but the topic is almost a month old, and my post ends up being deleted, because apparently responding to an old topic, even if it's on the first page is considered "bumping".

i want to say something, so should i start a new topic, which will result in two topics that are exactly the same on the first page, or what?

1) This should be in the Newbie Forum, seeing as you probably won't get a slew of serious responses in the Garbage Bin.

2) You may create a new topic if there is a topic that is more than two weeks old or off of Page 1 but ONLY if you have something new and relevant to add to the discussion.

If you are capable of contributing something useful to the topic (i.e. a new point or view or argument that everyone has else has failed to discuss), then you are allowed to bump topics. It's always better to bump an old topic than make a new one.

If you made such a post and it was deleted then the moderator screwed up.

If, on the other hand, you posted "i agree" and either nothing else or nothing new, then the post deletion is warranted. If you can't contribute something new you should not be making a new topic or bumping the old one.

i did, in part reiterate some of what guido i believe was saying, but a good part of my post added a different vantage point to the subject.

most of the forums i go to dont consider it bumping until it's on the third page or so, and even then it's not near as taboo as it is here from what i've seen.

it's strange because you have this double standard of "search for any topic that might have been posted before, before creating your own new one" and an aversion to bumping.

anyways, i guess i'll just let the post die off, it's not like what happens in the supreme court these days is of any interest anyways  .

just like the blind carpenter who said "one day i'll see it all"

and then he picked up his hammer and saw.

This is worthless, even for a TGB thread.

Fojar sucks at posting. How about you read the current threads rather than going down and bumping old ones, if it's just general chat?

I'd say it's worth bumping, but only if you have something to contribute. Those couple of threads needed much more discussion than they got, and since CT is pretty dead right now, I'm sure any thoughtful discussion would be appreciated, especially to those who posted in that thread.

It's not like the Supreme Court discussion is dead, too. There's still a "vacancy".
