Hayden, you don't seem to realize a few things.

First, you can't completely exclude your actions on the internet from the actions of your real life. If you want to be an asshole, wherever it may be, that means there is some part of you who likes being an asshole, and nobody likes that. The phrase "truths are often made in jest" applies; no matter how hard you try to be different or deny that your two lives can be completely separated you'll always fail to some extent. Take the guy who gets off to kiddie porn. He may think that because he's an upstanding citizen when not getting off to kiddie porn nobody will care, but when people know, nobody likes him because everyone knows that there is a part of him that likes kiddie porn.

The internet, along with every other facet of your life, is representative of who you are. If you want to be any sort of a decent human, not being an asshole wherever you are is a good start. You act as if the internet is a maturity shield, behind which you can do whatever you want and get away with it because, hey, "it's the internet". The simple fact is that, as stated above, your character is defined by the decisions you make, regardless of where they are made.

So why, if you meet people from the internet IRL, should they have ANY reason to drop whatever image they have of you and form a completely new one? You made an impression of yourself on the internet, and impressions don't change without evidence refuting it.

"The internet is serious business" is a crappy phrase because it has been used over and over and OVER AND OVER again. Things get lame very quickly, and this is no exception.

Now don't get me wrong here. I'm not saying Hayden is cool for thinking the internet is serious business. I don't really take the forums too seriously, though. When someone acts seriously (makes a thought out post, and probably uses good English) on the forums, you can get an impression from that.

However, when someone that has acted seriously posts something like "HeY gUyz i think boogiebear is da coolest", the only way that should affect your view on their personality is that you assume they enjoy practicing sarcasm. When they act like that all the time (think: Hayden), you can't really get an impression from them. You just know that they don't take the internet seriously, which doesn't really make them an asshole. It just means that they want to clown around and they think the internet is a fine place to do it. I don't really have a problem with that.
