Welp, time to do another one of these. My goal: make top 16 in D5, thus getting the Fractured Sunshine token (yes, I am that much of a token whore). Let's get at it!!!
Song: Stories Can Wait (Virtual Riot Remix) (64)
Opinion: Sightread AAA!!! Thank god TC_Halogen previewed the trickiest part of the file, so I was able to practice doing that section for a little while before the whole song was uploaded. That made the AAA that much easier. Still hate color gimmicks like that, though. Oh well, on to Round 2!!!
Song: summerghost (66)
Opinion: Exactly what I expected from bmah, with grace notes, flourishes, and several parts where I can get "bmah'd." Despite how nice this song sounds, it's pissing me off to no end. I should've AAA'd this 10 times over by now, but I keep choking at the end or dropping random goods where I shouldn't.
EDIT, 11/2, 12:12 AM: Oh, thank God!! Approx. 35 replays in total, but I finally got it. On to Round 3!!
Song: Requiem -Dies irae- (72)
Opinion: A technical chart from bmah. Call me crazy, but the JS is NOT what worries me; it's the color jacks and the polyrhythms that do. I can jack well, but doing it in this type of chart is gonna be difficult.
EDIT, 11/8, 11:45 PM: Spent a lot of time practicing this before finally going for a score. 3g after a few replays; not bad and I'm in good shape right now. If I can be more consistent in the beginning, BF or even AAA could be possible.
EDIT, 11/10, 3:45 PM: 1-0-0-1 now. And both came in the JS of all places. Can you believe that?
EDIT, 11/10, 11:52 PM: AAA complete. w00t!!! Now comes the big one . . . Round 4!!!
Song: HAELEQUIN (74)
Opinion: Seems fun to play. All I know is that this is the round I need to pass for that token.
EDIT, 11/15, 10:45 PM: Man, the cutoff is that high already?!? This is gonna be a tough round. Got a 3g score and that's only T-10 for now. I have AAA'd the 24ths onward in isolation, so . . . fingers crossed.
EDIT, 11/16, 11:25 PM: 2g now, and in a 5-way tie for 8th. Relatively safe.
EDIT, 11/21, 12 AM: Officially mindblocked now, especially on the ending. 2g is now the cutoff, and if one more person gets that or better and no one else with 2g improves, I'm gonna have to do a tiebreaker, which I'm not looking forward to. I have all day tomorrow to attempt to improve; otherwise, I'll just have to wait and see.
EDIT, 11/22, 12 AM: Epic tiebreaker avoided (though Riotpolice made it very interesting being a boo away). Fractured Sunshine token get. On to Round 5!!!
Song: Shatterscape (Bexarametric Remix) (76)
Score: AAA (WTF!?!)
Opinion: I reached my goal and got my token, so no matter what happens, I'm glad I made it this far. I like to split this song into 3 parts: fairly challenging first part with roll-burst transitions, a very challenging second part with many long bursts, and a third part with some color sections that can trip you up. The patterns are definitely manageable; it's only a matter of speed for me.
EDIT, 11/23, 12:30 AM: It's a AAA or die round already, and I'm off to a very bad start. I can't play this song properly cuz I can't find an offset that works. And when I switch to a different standalone, I get random lag spikes. I'm royally fucked right now.
EDIT, 11/23, 8:50 PM: 3g now. If I can hit b/w 450 and 800 cleanly and I can hold my nerves despite an unreliable offset, I think I can pull this off.
EDIT, 11/24, 4 PM: 2g. Getting there . . .
EDIT, 11/25, 10:50 PM: Holy shit!!! Fingers numb, body shaking, hyperventilating, but I actually got the AAA!!!!! This makes it my first Guru AAA as well!!! That also means I'm going into the tiebreaker, and I'm surviving for at least one more day.
Round 5 Tiebreaker
Song: The party's starting! (84)
Opinion: There's no point in me playing the Round 6 song if I can't make it past the tiebreaker. And given this song is nonstop fast JS with bursts mixed in, and seeing my PA absolutely sucked after playing it several times, I seriously doubt I'm even gonna make it to Round 6.
EDIT, 12/1, 4:15 PM: First FC of this song and my best PA so far. Currently 7th in the tiebreaker, though 3 people have yet to post scores for it.
EDIT, 12/2, 12 AM: I'M A SURVIVOR!!! 8th place in the tiebreaker means I can officially move on to Round 6. Mad respect for rCaliberGX for fighting to the end.
Song: Sokuseki! Nouchoku Music System (82)
Opinion: I've had the chance to preview this a few times, but I didn't bother playing it unless I officially made it to this round. There's a JS section with 24ths and, of course, the ending jumpgluts that are going to kill me. Not to mention the cutoff is already near an SDG. I won't be upset if this is my final round.
EDIT, 12/2, 11:30 PM: Bad start, maybe due to playing late. Either way, I'm so dead right now.
EDIT, 12/4, 10:45 PM: Still can't do any better. But on the bright side, I unlocked Epidermis v2.
EDIT, 12/5, 4 PM: Well, that's it. I'm officially calling it quits today. I was hoping maybe playing early today would leave my fingers fresher than when playing at night. However, I still can't do any better than the terrible score I have, I'll be out of the house after 6, and by the time I get back, I probably won't be in any mood to attempt the song again. I wish I had put up more of a fight this round, but I guess spending all that time working on the tiebreaker just didn't leave enough time to work on Round 6. So, I'm tapping out now.
FINAL RESULT (EDIT, 12/6, 6 PM): 7th place, Fractured Sunshine, possible profile badge(?)
EDIT, 12/6, 6 PM: Originally, I thought I finished in 8th place. But when I returned home late last night and checked the site, I found out that I actually finished in 7th place because YoshL, who I thought was gonna win D5, actually cheated his AAA of Round 6. My first thought was: why did he do it? His skills were good enough that I thought he could do it without cheating, but I was shocked when he admitted what he did. So, I'll end up in 7th place, and rCaliberGX, whom I kinda eliminated from the top 8 during the tiebreaker (even though Josemba was the last to post his qualifying tiebreaker score), will end up with vROFL after all.
P.S. Thanks to inspiration by rayword and rCaliberGX, I changed my forum description to "D5 vROFL Spoiler." XD
In a few days, I will have been a member of FlashFlashRevolution for 4 years. Also, in a few more plays, I will have enough points to be considered an FFR Veteran, which is pretty cool. So, I thought I'd take this opportunity to tell you how I actually became a part of this community.
I was mainly a Stepmania player, which I downloaded after I got my laptop as a college present. Back then, FFR had its own simfile database, so I mainly used FFR as a place to download simfiles (good ones) that I could play on Stepmania in my free time. I also made a few simfiles of my own which I uploaded to my Bemanistyle account (also jgano). However, one of them--The Devil Went Down to Georgia GH version--was too big to upload there, and the only way to upload it to FFR was if I made an account there. And that's exactly what I did.
I may have played a few songs in FFR when I made my profile, but mostly I just used it to download simfiles. That is, until the website went down, which was a big surprise to a lot of people. After it came back online, I was a little upset that they weren't gonna bring back the database (fuccin' copyright issues), but I wasn't gonna delete my profile out of anger. So, I decided to try playing FFR the game more seriously. At first, I was pretty bad; I was lucky to FC 9's and 10's and even get good scores on 7's and 8's. But after awhile, my skills improved more and more. In fact, I credit FFR with transitioning me from playing index to playing spread and being able to play the harder Stepmania files that, originally, I thought I would never FC or AA.
I am mostly proud of what has happened in the last few months. I've only recently introduced myself to other members of the FFR community, starting with the Halloween Scavenger Hunt. After that, I entered Midigami's Wheel of Arrowsmashing Tournament, which was my very first tournament, and was placed in D2, and it ended up becoming my first tournament victory (albeit I was the only one left in D2 by Round 5). But, it was my decision to enter the Official FFR tourney that really catalyzed my skillboost. When I found out I was playing in D3, I didn't think I would make it even halfway through. Yet, round after round, I found myself getting closer to actually winning that division. In the end, I finished in 3rd place (wow!!!). During the time the tourney was going on, my skills improved greatly. Now, I could AAA 9's pretty easily and I finally have a few 10 AAA's (5, as of 1/16/12). With this boost, I'm hoping I can eventually FC an FGO and AAA an FMO file in the near future.
So, there you have it. My journey from using FFR as just a simfile database to becoming an above-average FFR player. Hope you enjoy reading this and I hope that my skills can get even better than what they are now. :D
Thanks jgano. You didn't have to but I appreciate your Easter Egg gift of 15,000 credits. yeehaw. heh heh. yeah. I had about 26,000 credits or so before. Just earned by all the songs I have full combos, AAAs or just earned a high enough score. I love my ranking status so far. I have improved so much since I began.
what you would comment about my overall ranking now. 5593 is not bad, huh? my average ranking is quite a bit higher due to my learning how to play more of the complex songs that i am still new to and cant read some of the tricky note patterns but i am getting better. i'm also trying to improve my play on the real ddr mat as well. i play most standard songs pretty well. i can hit up heavy mode usually with some speed mod adjustments; like 1.5 x speed and solo mode for example. depends on the song. anyways, kudos man to your overall ranking. it is 357. your average rank is 49. thats way better than me. keep it up man. wonder who's number one now? seems to keep on changing so much now.
