Dronak's Details
About me:
My playing style is Conventional One-Hand 3-Fingers, I don't shrink my screen but do use a speed mod (was 1.5x, now 2x), I've had some very long periods of inactivity, and I didn't play any games like this before joining FFR. Keep these points in mind when looking at my scores/posts.
Interests:
Widely varied since I love learning.
Fav Music:
I like most styles of music. Big band, jazz, blues, and classical have been long time favorites. Lately, most of the time I listen to anime music, J-pop, and electronic music (particularly trance or ambient), plus some of whatever's popular.

Visting After ~1 Year
Posted on: September 7, 2015, at 02:33:25pm   [0 comments]
It looks like the last time I was here for a while was about a year ago. So one of the first things I do is check out the updated level stats to update my spreadsheet of scores. Doing this, I find out scoring has changed; I found out how after a little searching. OK, spreadsheet gets updated. Then I see some rather old songs with very poor ranks that I know I played. Fortunately these are fairly low difficulty, so I get decent scores on them. FCed a few, so my skill's not completely gone, but it's definitely poor compared to when I played regularly. Next, a pass through some unplayed songs (because they're new) that also have poor ranks to improve my overall rank. Knowing I can't play very well anymore, I stick to things under ~35 in difficulty. I'm a little surprised at the kind of steps in what are considered the easy third of songs on the site: e.g., triples, some very quick rhythms, switches between eighth patters and triplet patterns. I didn't expect quite that much difficulty at the lower levels. It reinforces the idea I had a while ago that the site is really targeting advanced players. Back then I remember fewer low-difficulty songs and lots of high-difficulty songs. Now it looks like there are more low-difficulty songs, but the overall difficulty has increased, making the new "easy" songs harder than that old "easy" songs were. *shrug* I guess that's what most users want, so they keep the majority of the visitors happy that way. Personally, I'd (still) like to see a little more done for the more casual players. When I played regularly, I was OK, but never fantastic. Now that I play so rarely, it's sometimes hard to find things that are enjoyable with the site looking like it's so stronger geared at advanced players. Oh well. I've got plenty of other things to keep me busy. I do think I'll still come by here once in a while, but I'll probably never get back to the sort of daily playing I once did.

AAA'ed on First Play

OK, it was only a difficulty 18 song (Eight), but still. I haven't played much FFR for a long time, so the fact that I was able to AAA a song on the very first play, having never heard the music or seen the arrow stream before, was a real surprise. A pleasant one, naturally, but one I don't expect to happen much. It's too easy to make mistakes when you're as out of practice as I am.

A Little Help From Speed Mods
Posted on: October 23, 2014, at 10:17:24pm   [0 comments]
I was playing a few songs today and having a little trouble. While that's to be expected since I'm out of practice, I remembered that using a speed mod helped in the past. I checked this setting and it was at 1.5x, as I remembered it should be, so I bumped it up to 2x. That seemed to help a bit -- I was able to improve a few scores on lower difficulty songs. It certainly can't make up for all the skill I've lost over the years, but it seems like it can help at least a little bit with reading the arrows, which provides some small compensation.

Now if I can just eliminate the lag I seem to get sometimes. I'm surprised I still seem to have lag at all because I have a pretty good gaming laptop now. If it's real, I suspect it's due to things running on my machine, maybe taking up some memory or processing power. I'll have to try stopping some of them, or maybe seeing if running FFR stand-alone will help.

A Few Thoughts

I try to stop in at FFR once in a while and play a few games now and then, more so for old time's sake than for any real attempt at getting good scores or anything. I'm way out of practice at the game now since I rarely play anymore, and I'm pretty sure I've lost most of whatever skill I used to have back in the day. Even the really low difficulty songs don't seem as easy I think they should be. I was playing some songs tonight and actually starting to wonder if some of the arrows are slightly off from the music -- while music's not my profession, I do have a good background in it and was surprised at times to see taps I thought were on beat with the music register with lower accuracy than I expected. I'm sure the step files are synced far better now than they were originally though (e.g., look at the Legacy songs), so I guess that just goes to show how much skill I've lost. :P Much of my notes from the last post regarding my playing and loss of ability still hold true, though that's probably obvious. To avoid losing touch completely, it would be nice to squeeze in a little more play time here, but I'm not sure that will happen. Oh well. Oh, it was nice to see that my FFR Rank, although dropping as expected, hasn't completely taken a nose dive. I know it isn't a great metric for anything, but it's still nice to have a reasonable ranking for it. Anyway, I'm around (kind of) should anyone want to get in touch with me.

Observations After a Long Time Away
Posted on: September 28, 2013, at 11:55:52pm   [0 comments]
I've been playing a little FFR the past few days after having been essentially gone for a few years, and noticed a few things about the game and my playing. While the game stuff probably isn't new, I haven't seen it before. So here are some remarks, in no particular order.

About the game: Difficulty levels are 1-99 now, which means I have to adjust from the old 1-12 scale. There are lots of news songs, as well as a bunch of new tokens, and both were to be expected. I see a few different game engines available now -- any particular pros/cons to each? I think the new menu music is an old change, because I kind of remember talk about it in the past. It was still a little odd not hearing what I was used to though. Purchasing songs doesn't seem to work. I tried getting the one 1-credit song I saw, just to see if I could buy songs, but it just seems to hang. Oh, I've run into a few triples already, which was a bit of a surprise. I don't think this is new, but it seems a little more common now.

About my playing: put simply, I'm worse now than before when I was regularly active, which isn't the least bit surprising. So far, I've been trying to improve my average rank by playing songs I haven't yet. Even an absolutely horrible score is better than none, and it will at least take me out of dead last, which boosts my average rank a bit. I've been sticking to easier songs first, of course, and having some trouble even with them. I'm generally passing them and getting to the end, but sometimes I'm not getting FCs where I think I should have (or maybe would have in the past), making my AAA chances almost nothing. So my skill's dropped. My stamina has dropped, too. After playing a handful of songs around the 15-20 difficulty area, I was getting tired. I'm pretty sure I used to be able to go for longer than that before it bothered me. I'm not sure how my arrow-reading skills have fared, but I suspect it's similar to before. If they're spread out enough for me to tell them apart in the stream, the real issue is making my fingers react to what my eyes see. It always has been, actually, but some songs are easier to read than others. If I have the time and desire to play enough, I can probably get back at least some of the skill that has been lost with inactivity. I'm not sure I will, but it's at least nice to know my skill's not all gone, and I can at least sort of keep up with the easier songs even after being away so long.

Thoughts?

Yes, that's my digital piano, a Yamaha YPG-635. I think I used it as my old avatar, too, but this is a newer picture with a better camera.

Hey! I noticed the Top One-Handers thread in the forums is dieing down a bit....I think we need to start posting again to keep it alive; it would be a shame for all that hard work Bynary did to go to waste. What do you think?

rawr, the Tier Point list has been updated. Make sure you re-tally your requirements, as a lot have changed. Several new songs have been added, in addition to several songs having expanded reqs. The total number of points is listed on the bottom of the list each time it is updated, for future reference.

Was going to give you a thumbs up for the long post you made in Top One Handers but I guess I already did. Hi. :p

Hey dude. I've updated the top one handers list, if you want a look. I've also tossed out a proposal for the TP list, and feedback would be appreciated. It is in the TP list, http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/showthread.php?t=95819&page=9
Interestingly enough, your average rank remained the same from the last update.

I read your comments. Well said, however, I say you can still improve, as long as you don't have something like carpal tunnel (I doubt it). You're still doing pretty good though, I'm sure you can maintain your spot on that list easily.

Hey dude, I'm not sure if you've forgotten about the top one handers list, but I've completely redone it: check it out! http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/showthread.php?t=95819
